It differed in all of those cases, and at different times in the process as well. People forget, for example, how traumatic the idea of Age of Apocalypse was to readers and retailers before it was coming out–“You mean you’re canceling all of the X-Men books I love? Whyyyyyyyy?” And certainly there was a ton of outcry around Avengers Disassembled, from the standing Avengers audience.
As someone who has been into fandom since before AoA, and was just getting into the internet around the time we were figuring out that yes, Marvel was going to kill Xavier, alter time, and cancel the X-Books?
Let me tell you, people *lost their minds* and went utterly apeshit over it.
