Back in high school, I was already a big Stephen King fan. My parents enrolled me in the Stephen King Library, which got me all his hardcovers as they came out, and an older book in HC once every two months or whatever. I miss it…but I digress.
For most of my HS years, I got the yearly Stephen King calendar to hang on my bedroom door. One year, there was a picture of Tim Curry’s Pennywise. IIRC, it was of him standing near the entrace to the sewers, holding balloons.
Except there was a…problem. Hanging on my door, and the way I slept at the time, I basically was staring RIGHT at this image of a horror movie clown *all night long*. With the dim, murky light from a nightlight in the bathroom skulking down the hallway and very dimly lighting it up. It was JUST enough to make it clear what the image was.
For that *entire month* I had to switch to the previous or next month, because this was all JUST unsettling enough that there was no way to get to sleep staring at that image as it was literally staring back at me, no matter how much I intellectually knew it was Tim Curry, in a movie, of a completely fictional entity. I don’t even find Pennywise that scary! But talk about all the right elements.
