Fans often accuse writers of not knowing the characters, but without naming names, have you ever worked with a writer who genuinely didn't know the characters he was supposed to be writing?

brevoortformspring answered:

We tend not to hire writers who don’t know the characters.

Fans saying this typically mean that the writer in question doesn’t agree with that fan’s opinions about that character.

I think the closest I’ve ever heard of something remotely like this happening…and I know I am gonna get some of this wrong, so take my faded memories with a gigantic grain of salt…

Back when Warren Ellis was grabbed as a last minute replacement on an Excalibur story, he either couldn’t because of time, or didn’t want to be bothered doing research into the characters and things going on.

This lead to some interesting new ideas with Limbo and Illyana’s Soulsword that never quite matched up with past continuity, amongst other things.

And still, he went on to be one of the top three runs on that book.
